SnappyData
Feb 2015 - Mar 2019
3 yrs 9 mos
Director of Marketing

SnappyData is an in-memory database vendor who differentiated based on having a deep integration with the popular analytics framework Apache Spark. SnappyData was created by the founders of GemStone/GemFire (mentioned below) and spun out of Pivotal with funding from GE, Pivotal and Paul Maritz.

At SnappyData I:

  • - Developed and executed the marketing strategy for a small startup with a small budget in the 40 billion dollar big data industry.
  • - Based on SEO research, developed a messaging plan around the phrase “Spark Database,” with about 800 searches/month at the time.
  • - Designed and built our initial landing page and our full fledged website; ranked on the first page of “Spark Database” within 4 months.
  • - Implemented a marketing content strategy based on internal emails. These blogs ended up being the single biggest contributor to website traffic. The best one directed 12,000 people to the site in a single day.
  • - Built an internal apache mailing list scraping tool called “SnappyForce” on weekends. This tool collected name, email, linkedin, github, twitter and email content on a daily basis for any apache mailing list (focused on Spark/Hadoop). Also surfaced emails with keywords.
  • - Within a year we had 5,000 solid prospects from SnappyForce that we knew were using Spark and in some cases, in a large-scale, mission-critical way. As of Sept 2018, 10,000. This scraping cost $0.
  • - Designed and built a Cloud deployment tool on SnappyData's website.
  • - Created a way to gather prospects from relevant conferences without actually attending them. The cost of this effort was only the cost of an email enrichment tool like Clearbit (~$200/mo).
  • - Implemented and ran SnappyData’s inside sales strategy which involved recurring emails to prospects, managing calls with prospects, moving them to leads and doing lead management.
  • - Wrote Product Marketing content for the blog, e.g.: Father's Database, Spark 2.0
  • - Created/Edited Product Marketing Screencasts, e.g.: Deploy on AWS in a couple clicks, Approximate Query Processing, Scala/Spark Programming Quickstart
  • - StackOverflow posts aimed at helping the community, but also driving traffic back to our site, e.g.: Spark Database Ecosystem
  • - Was the first line of technical support on our site’s real-time chat (Drift) and our community Slack chat.
  • - Organized email blasts, webinars, meetups, conferences, public relations, social media, was the final editor on all blogs and wrote some blogs.

Third party quotes about me during my time at SnappyData:

  • “you are like the best Customer Advocate ever”
  • “you are one of the main reasons I am willing to do to the POC … you understand customer service and the value of sales my friend”
  • “I am so happy to see the development as the design. I have to admit you have been the fastest and by far the best developer I have worked with.”

VMware
May 2010 - Nov 2010

Marketing Specialist II

Once acquired by VMware, GemStone was given a healthy marketing budget. I wrote a brief on turning GemFire, GemStone's in-memory data grid, into what would be called a Managed Service today and presented to VMware/SpringSource leaders. This was a bit too forward thinking for them and I found it difficult to make things happen in this new structure. I didn't stay long and instead founded my own company (above).
